چکیده

Australasian Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine November 2010 13 (4) Introduction The purpose of this paper is to provide a focused overview of the key concepts in the assessment of lower limb chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) with an emphasis on specific techniques which can assist the sonographer or sonologist in achieving an accurate and time-efficient examination. In the context of this paper, CVI will pertain to lower extremity superficial and/or deep venous incompetence of any degree leading to the classic clinical signs of venous disease including: varicose veins, peripheral swelling and skin changes. This paper is by no means a comprehensive review of all issues surrounding CVI and duplex scanning. Interested readers are directed to the reference section for a selection of landmark papers and further reading.

A failure of preoperative duplex imaging to diagnose a lower extremity venous aneurysm in a patient with severe chronic venous insufficiency

OBJECTIVE We present a case of recurrent bilateral lower extremity venous stasis ulcers in association with a superficial venous aneurysm at the right saphenofemoral junction that was misdiagnosed on preoperative duplex scanning. METHODS A 53-year-old female presented to our clinic with 6-year history of bilateral lower extremity venous stasis ulcers. Her past medical history was significant ...

Non-thrombotic Abnormalities on Lower Extremity Venous Duplex Ultrasound Examinations

INTRODUCTION Emergency physician-performed compression ultrasonography focuses primarily on the evaluation of the proximal veins of the lower extremity in patients with suspected deep venous thrombosis (DVT). A detailed sonographic evaluation of lower extremity is not performed. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of non-thrombotic findings on comprehensive lower extremi...

The relation between pelvic varicose veins, chronic pelvic pain and lower extremity venous insufficiency in women.

PURPOSE To determine the frequency of pelvic varicose veins with transvaginal ultrasound and associated lower extremity venous insufficiency with Doppler ultrasound in women with chronic pelvic pain of undetermined origin. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 100 women with chronic pelvic pain of undetermined origin lasting more than 6 months were included in the study. The presence of anechogeni...

Duplex ultrasound investigation of the veins in chronic venous disease of the lower limbs--UIP consensus document. Part I. Basic principles.

OBJECTIVES Duplex ultrasound investigation has become the reference standard in assessing the morphology and haemodynamics of the lower limb veins. The project described in this paper was an initiative of the Union Internationale de Phlébologie (UIP). The aim was to obtain a consensus of international experts on the methodology to be used for assessment of veins in the lower limb by ultrasound ...

A comparison between descending phlebography and duplex Doppler investigation in the evaluation of reflux in chronic venous insufficiency: a challenge to phlebography as the "gold standard".

To evaluate venous reflux in 56 lower limbs of 32 consecutive patients, hemodynamic tests, ascending and descending phlebography, and supine and erect quantitative duplex scanning were performed and the clinical severity was classified (class 0 = 15, class 1 = 19, class 2 = 8, and class 3 = 14). Of the 56 lower limbs, 22 (40%) had severe swelling and hyperpigmentation with or without ulcer (cla...
